Manuka honey is the only honey known in the world whose properties are related to the non-peroxide activity of its ingredients.

Manuka is native to New Zealand, Australia and Tasmania. When flowering occurs, the plant produces an antibacterial substance called methylglyoxal, which is collected along with bee nectar during flower pollination. While other types of honey usually lose their antimicrobial potential when exposed to light and heat, manuka, thanks to methylglyoxal, continues to provide antiseptic, anti-inflammatory properties. In addition, the properties of manuka are preserved even when irradiated and sterilized - which makes it a truly indispensable product for medical use.

The uniqueness of the described honey was discovered by Professor Peter Molan, he found that this composition retains its medicinal properties even when the hydrogen peroxide contained in all varieties of honey is removed. The cause was unknown until methylglyoxal was discovered in 2008. This substance has an antimicrobial effect and is present not only in plants, but also in animal cells. It enters the human blood, and from there it spreads through the cells, removing all the moisture from them, the bacteria have no food left, so they die.

Manuka has its own system for measuring effectiveness, which is calculated based on the rate of death of bacteria and viruses. The old name is “unique manuka factor” (UFM), the new one is an indicator of the level of dietary methylglyoxal (MGO). Accordingly, the higher this indicator, the higher the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial properties of honey.

This type of honey can also be used as a treatment not only internally, for example, for diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, heartburn, inflammatory bowel syndrome, but also as a remedy for colds and throat treatment.
